Asked Questions Is Ritalin Addicting? I do not consider Ritalin/Dexedrine/amphetamines to be addicting. They are controlled substances which can certainly be abused, but usually by people who are not ADD/ADHD. The latter may attempt to get "high" with these drugs, but it usually doesn't work. (For young adults, this is a topic I ask about, to get a clue to the diagnosis.) It is common for a child to be on Ritalin or Dexedrine 4 times a day for years, discontinue the medication, and just go back to the way he was. He does not go through withdrawal, which is the hallmark of addiction. When amphetamines are abused, it is usually in very high doses, up to 1000mg or more at one time (often intravenously), compared to a dose of 10-80mg given medically. |
